January 19, 2022 — From Germany, LinuxNews shares Open Invention Network’s news about its 9th Linux System expansion. Launched in 2005, OIN offers free community membership to any business, or individual, that agrees they will not file any patent claims against the free GNU/Linux Operating System (OS). The founding members of OIN include IBM, NEC, Novell, Philips, Red Hat, SUSE and Sony, followed by Google. By signing the agreement, community members commit to share their Linux System patents and applications with over 3,600 worldwide OIN members without royalties. Patents owned by OIN are also distributed royalty-free within the network. The new definition adds 337 applications, protecting 3,730 packages against patent trolls and other patent attacks.
