June 7, 2023 — Jess Hertz, General Counsel of Shopify — an OIN community member — writes a blog about their efforts to defend entrepreneurs and innovation against patent trolls. “Shopify and our entrepreneurs are builders and innovators,” he says. “They spend years, sometimes their entire lives creating products designed to improve the world. Patent trolls? They lazily sit back, burying hard-working entrepreneurs in piles of legal paperwork … We want to build up and build forward. They want to destroy and stifle. And Shopify? Well, we’re done with this game.” That’s why Shopify filed a motion in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas with The Honorable David Ezra, requesting the Court to third-party interest disclosure in Lower48 IP LLC v. Shopify, Inc. Along with Shopify, our community members, and others active in the Open Source arena, we will continue to support legislation and judicial actions that expose patent trolls.
