Twitter Inc. has been built on open source software since it was created in March 2006 and made its debut in July by CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey along with entrepreneur’s and computer masterminds Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams.
The company’s tipping point happened at the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWI) conference in 2007 when Twitter usage climbed from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000 per day during the event. The first unassisted off-Earth Twitter message was posted from the International Space Station by NASA astronaut T. J. Creamer on January 22, 2010. By 2013, Twitter was one of the “10 Most Visited Websites” by Alexa Internet and has been described as “the SMS of the Internet.” Today, the American online news and social networking service has 500 million Tweets sent each day, or 6,000 Tweets every second.
Based in San Francisco, CA, Twitter has more than 25 offices around the world and joined our community in 2011.
