January 18, 2022 — ZDNet headlines cover OIN’s announcement it is expanding the scope and coverage of its cross-license — defined as the Linux System — and OIN’s protecting parasol against Open Source’s Intellectual Property (IP) enemies has grown ever wider, ever more protective. This 9th update — which will be effective March 31, 2022 — includes 337 new software packages, bringing OIN’s total number of Linux System packages up to 3,730. “Linux and open source collaboration continue to thrive as they accelerate the pace of transformation across a spectrum of industries. With this update, we have addressed expansion in key software platforms and projects. Additionally, we have added protection for strategic packages that enable hardware design and embedded applications,” said Keith Bergelt, CEO of OIN. New technology areas that are gaining patent protection include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Embedded Libraries, Hardware Design and Container Management Tools, among others.
