December 8, 2022 — The Linux Foundation’s Annual Report 2022 — Leadership in Security and Innovation— highlights the Unified Patents Open Source Zone, an ambitious funding initiative to deter Non-Practicing Entities (NPEs) with invalid patents from asserting against Open Source Software (OSS) packages such as Linux. Since its creation 3 years ago in partnership with Open Invention Network, IBM, Microsoft and the Linux Foundation, the Unified Patents Open Source Zone has invalidated 34 patents, initially determined 7 to be flawed, and 3 are awaiting review.
