After a rich history together, Samar Abbas, CEO, and Maxim Fateev, CTO, launched Temporal in 2019 as a 100% Open Source execution platform and workflow orchestration system that runs business-critical functions to long-running AI agents. Together, they previously released the first public version of Amazon’s Simple Workflow Service. Later, Samar created the Azure Durable Task Framework at Microsoft while Maxim led the development of Amazon’s messaging infrastructure, which became the foundation for Amazon SQS. In 2015, they reunited at Uber to co-create Cadence, a transformative workflow engine and setting the stage for Temporal’s founding vision. Released on an MIT license, developers can run Open Source Temporal themselves or use Temporal Cloud, a fully managed service used by more than 4,000 customers, including OpenAI, Cursor, Netflix and JPMorgan Chase. Headquartered in Seattle, WA, the company serves over 2,900 global customers, more than 22,000 community members, 183,000 weekly active developers and processes 1 trillion actions and 20 million installs per month.
