Shopify — a Canadian multinational eCommerce company that operates a platform for retail Point-of-Sale (POS) systems — got its start when 3 friends developed an online store to sell snowboarding equipment. They relied on the Open Source web application framework Ruby on Rails to develop the site and created an Open Source template language called Liquid, written in Ruby on Rails. Both Open Source applications have been in use since the online retailer was established in 2006. Based in Ottawa, Ontario, Shopify serves more than 5 million customers in approximately 175 countries & processed $292.3 billion (USD) in transactions in 2024 — 57% from the United States. Major customers include Tesla, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz, Lindt, Whole Foods, Red Bull & Hyatt.
