June 2, 2023 — The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is trying to rush a new controversial rule through legislation without Congressional approval. The proposed changes eliminate the ability for 3rd parties to help clean bad patents out of the system — patents that are often used against Open Source. Organizations that advocate for — and protect — Open Source are fighting against the change, including OIN, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Eclipse Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, Open Source Initiative, and Unified Patents.
