Mistral AI SAS — named after the mistral, a powerful, cold wind in southern France — is a French AI company that provides open-weight LLMs with both Open Source and proprietary models. It was formed in 2023 by 3 French AI researchers — Arthur Mensch (a former employee of Google DeepMind) and Guillaume Lample & Timothée Lacroix (both of whom worked as large-scale AI models specialists for Meta Platforms.) In February 2024, Mistral’s language models became available on Microsoft’s Azure cloud along with Mistral’s multilingual conversational assistant Le Chat. In 2025, Mistral AI introduced a Pro Subscription tier, priced at $14.99 per month providing access to more advanced models, unlimited messaging & web browsing.
