April 5, 2010 – Etsy empowers sellers to do what they love and helps buyers find one-of-a-kind items they love. Launched as iospace, Esty is approaching its 15th birthday in 2020 and has over 60 million handmade and vintage items, as well as craft supplies available online. Joining our community in 2017, the site connected 2.1 million sellers with 39.4 buyers in nearly every country in the world.
The company’s main office is in Dumbo, Brooklyn, NY — which also hosts open crafting classes in Etsy Labs— and operates 6 international offices, as well as additional locations in NY and California. Robert Kalin, one of 3 co-founders and former CEO, named the site Etsy because he “wanted a nonsense word because I wanted to build the brand from scratch. In Italian, ‘etsi’ is a frequently used word meaning “oh, yes” and in both Latin and French, it means ‘”what if.”
