June 12, 2024 — The Linux System is an Open Source patent protection program that includes code from Linux Kernel and hundreds of other Open Source projects. OIN’s community grants cross-licenses to protect & enable Open Source development, encourage innovation & discourage aggressive patent assertion. Because more technologies are now covered by the system, it means members have patent cross-licenses for more than 4,530 protected packages. The company regularly revises the Linux System every 18-24 months to keep pace with technology & because OIN takes a measured approach to new technologies, it did not include AI in this update, according to CEO Keith Bergelt.
