Durham, NC (December 5, 2013) – Open Invention Network (OIN), the organization formed to protect Linux, announced today that UnitedStack, a leading OpenStack solutions provider based in Beijing and Santa Clara, has become a licensee. OIN is supporting patent non-aggression covering Linux use in the cloud and is helping open cloud companies obtain free patent cross-licenses from more than 640 OIN community participants. These cross-licenses cover Linux System packages that power underlying technologies for every open cloud stakeholder.

“Linux and open source are the fundamental layers of the open cloud,” said Keith Bergelt, CEO of Open Invention Network. “We are pleased to work with UnitedStack, one of the top contributors to OpenStack, and to see their participation in the OIN community. They have embraced patent non-aggression and invested in the future of the open cloud by signing an OIN license.”

“As a leading provider of open cloud solutions in Asia, especially in China, we believe OIN’s work to promote patent non-aggression in cloud computing is of great value to our organization and to the industry,” said Hui Cheng, CEO of UnitedStack, “We look forward to being part of OIN’s community to develop and grow open cloud computing.”

Participation in the ever growing OIN community is free for any company, institution or individual that agrees not to assert patents against the Linux System. Participation in the community includes a free license to OIN’s strategic intellectual property portfolio, which includes technologies such as cloud computing, big data and analytics, smart mobile devices and mobile broadband, Software-Defined Networking, and social networking, among many others. The OIN license can be reviewed and signed online at http://licenses.openinventionnetwork.com/.
