Media & Entertainment
Digitization. Animation. Visual & sound effects. 3-D. Motion pictures. Video games. Virtual & Augmented Reality. Interactive, multisensory experiences. Real-time reporting. Live news.
The entertainment industry has always been on the cutting edge of technology. From creating the 1st motion picture in 1888 to producing the 1st animated film in 1908 & screening the 1st movie digitally – Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace — all forms of entertainment have come a long way.
At a time of great technological change and innovation, creative industries wouldn’t be where they are without Open Source Software. The origins of this shift began with digital visual effects and animated films in the mid to late 1900s when computer-powered techniques brought about a new era of filmmaking. In 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Linux Foundation established the Academy Software Foundation to serve as a neutral platform for continued development of Open Source Software in the industry. In the early 2000s, OpenEXR — developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) — and OpenColorIO — developed at Sony Pictures Imageworks — were publicly released as Open Source tools.
By 2023, the Media & Entertainment industry is expected to reach $2.6 trillion dollars, according to Statista.
