Cloud DBMS Surpasses On-Premises Hosting - A Perspective on Open Source in the Cloud
The cloud has brought about many positive changes. It has also brought about unexpected changes, some of which are taking place with Database Management Systems (DBMS) where revenue is shifting dramatically between cloud and on-premises hosting. Read OIN's latest whitepaper.
Cybersecurity continues to be a focus of the community. Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) has introduced a plan to better secure Open Source Software (OSS) that could cost more than $150 million. The goals are to ensure OSS runs securely in production environments, improves vulnerability discovery and remediate & reduce the time to patch software. OpenSSF members — including Amazon, Intel, VMware, Ericsson, Google & Microsoft — have pledged $30 million.
Open Source adoption continues growing in the United Kingdom. BetaNews reports 54% of UK businesses extensively use Open Source Software (OSS) and 26% rely on it for Information Technology (IT). Integration varies by industry, with 37% of Financial Services dependent on Open Source, compared to 1 in 8 public entities.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) — China’s main regulator for technology — releases a new set ofDevelopment Planning Guidancerecognizing China’s 1st home-grown Open Source foundation. The OpenAtom Foundation, which has developed OpenHarmony — a next-gen Operating System (OS) allowing machines & connected objects to share software, as well as hardware — as a major accomplishment. China hopes to create 2-3 Open Source globally influential communities by 2025. (The article is in Chinese)

Open Source is Driving the Future of Automotive
Today, vehicles are becoming mobile tech devices. In other words, automakers are becoming software companies and Open Source is running your car. Chances are, you have Linux under your hood. Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Great Wall Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, Renault, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and other manufacturers throughout the world are using Open Source Software (OSS) and/or Open Source Hardware (OSH) in one way or another. By 2023, an estimated 76.3 million vehicles will have Internet access and onboard modems to communicate with external systems, according to International Data Corp.
A key Open Source project for the industry is Automotive Grade Linux (AGL). A collaborative Open Source project at the Linux Foundation, AGL brings together global automakers, suppliers, developers and tech companies to accelerate the adoption of the connected car. AGL is also fueling innovation for the future — Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), digital cockpits, vehicle electrification and self-driving cars.
Knowing the Open Source community is — and will continue — delivering technology advances to promote competition, foster growth and meet consumer desires, a growing number of automotive industry frontrunners are publicly demonstrating their commitment to both Open Source and Patent Non-Aggression by joining OIN. These include not only the top manufacturers, but critical providers to the automotive supply chain. A few of our newest automotive community members include Aisin, Car Mate, Rivian, TOKAI RIKA and the MAHLE Group.

“Success is never final, failure is never fatal, and it's courage that counts." — John Wooden, American Basketball Coach

With nearly 30 years in the high tech industry building, leading and creating market opportunities, Brian is a proponent of open collaboration and peer production — both core tenets of Open Source. “I believe the adherence to these core ideals has allowed for fast, innovative, and sometimes risky, development of technologies, devices and systems that have impacted and improved our collective quality of life,” he says.
A native New Yorker, Brian has lived in every continental U.S. time zone — Raleigh, Denver,
Chicago and San Diego — since attending college at the State University of New York College (SUNY) Cortland where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy Analysis. He joined MediaOne (now Comcast) helping introduce the 1st high-speed cable service and then landed with Sony where he worked for 15 years in various executive roles including sales, consumer services, Information Technology (IT) and eCommerce. It was during this time, he not only learned about Open Source, but started making business decisions for Sony to integrate Open Source technologies. Among other career highlights, Brian served as the Executive Director of Consumer Sales and Sales Planning North America for Lenovo, moving the division from #6 to #2 in market share.
In his role with OIN, he leveraged previous relationships helping secure Costco (2019) and Best Buy (2020) as OIN members. In addition, Brian serves as the Managing Director of Cerebral Assets, which helps global companies enter and expand their businesses into the United States marketplace and frequently requires Intellectual Property (IP) licensing assistance.
