NASA's latest drone helicopter — partially powered by Open Source Software (OSS) — landed on the Red Planet — in February, making its historic flight on April 19th. Since Mars is 176 million miles from Earth, the drone — named Ingenuity — flies itself using Linux and NASA's Open source F´ framework.
The White House Introduces a Familiar Face to Open Source
President Joe Biden appointed David Recordon – who has worked in Open Source as a developer and manager for nearly 20 years — to his administration as the White House Director of Technology. It is expected he will prioritize next-gen technologies such as facial recognition and predictive analytics.
Is the UK Becoming a European Hotspot for Open Source?
Open Source contributes as much as £43 billion ($60.22 bn) to the UK’s economy, according to the State of Open: The UK in 2021 Report. Economists’ Forecasts Open Source in Telecommunications will be Mainstream by 2025
Telecom — a 140-year-old industry — has accepted Open Source as today’s industry standard for transforming legacy technologies. If Communication Service Providers (CSPs) don't get on board, they will be left behind, in a market estimated to be a $29 billion industry by 2025, according to ABI Research.
Some companies from all over the world — including many OIN community members such as AT&T, KDDI Corporation, SK Telecom, Telstra, Verizon, and Vodafone — are embracing Open Source and modernizing their infrastructures. Other businesses are slowly realizing Open Source not only plays a critical role in Telecom but provides many benefits to their organizations. Among these are reduced development and operating costs, which in turn allows them to offer savings to customers. In addition, Telecom firms can further maximize their budgets by integrating Open Source Software (OSS) which reduces — if not, eliminates — licensing fees.

Famous automaker Henry Ford helped launch the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association which led an Open Source initiative where major U.S. auto manufacturers shared technology patents openly and without seeking any monetary benefits in return.
